The President Casino barge broke free from it's mooring 1/2 mile away and lands on a Holiday Inn during Hurricane Katrina. Looters are out before the winds die down collecting thousands of quarters. This aerial image of the Museum site following Hurricane Katrina, August 29th, 2005, shows the casino barge sitting on top of the Gallery of African American Art. To the left of the image, the Center for Ceramics stands relatively undamaged. The original Pleasant Reed House was destroyed by the surge, not the barge. Beauvoir's Memorial Gateway, authorized by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1917, was destroyed by the President Casino barge as it was hurled westward by Katrina from its anchorage at the Broadwater Marina in Biloxi. This photo was taken by Tex Hamill for 'Down South' magazine in 1956. After the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, FEMA regulations were heightened, with strict measurements put in place for the safety of the public. In October 2005, a law was passed by the Mississippi legislature that allowed casino operators to build on land within 245 m (800 ft) of the waterfront.
